How HIFU Works: Your Questions Answered

Plain answers about high-intensity focused ultrasound: what it is, what a session feels like, how long it takes, what it costs at our Irvine clinic and who should wait.

The short version

Ultrasound is sound energy at a frequency people cannot hear. In HIFU, that energy is focused to a small point at a set depth beneath the skin, the way a magnifying glass focuses light. The device is moved across the treatment area in a planned pattern so each section receives energy at the chosen depths, while the surface of the skin stays intact.

HIFU questions and answers

What is HIFU?
HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. A handheld device sends focused ultrasound energy to set depths beneath the surface of the skin. There are no incisions and no needles.
Who usually considers HIFU?
Adults who notice that skin on the face, jawline or neck has started to soften or loosen and who would like a non-surgical option to talk through. At your consultation your provider reviews your goals, your skin and your health history, and tells you whether HIFU fits.
What does a HIFU session feel like?
Most people feel warmth and short tingling or prickling pulses as the energy is delivered. Comfort varies from person to person. Tell your provider at any time and the settings or pace can be adjusted.
How long is a visit?
A full face visit is booked for 1 hr 25 mins per visit, and full face and neck for 1 hr 30 mins per visit. A jawline session takes 45 mins and a cheeks session 55 mins. The time includes cleansing, mapping the treatment area and the treatment itself.
Is there recovery time?
Many clients go back to their day after the visit. Some notice temporary redness, swelling or tenderness in the treated area. Your provider goes over aftercare and what to watch for before you leave.
When would I see a change, and how long does it last?
Any change in appearance develops gradually over the weeks after treatment, and it is temporary. Results vary from person to person, which is why we talk through realistic expectations at your consultation.
How many sessions are included?
Our Full Face and Full Face and Neck prices are packages of 3 sessions: $2,000 and $2,950. Cheeks ($699) and the jawline introductory offer ($350) are single sessions. Body HIFU is $450 per area.
Who is HIFU not right for?
HIFU is not right for everyone. Pregnancy, certain implants or devices, active skin conditions or open areas where you want treatment, and some medical conditions can mean we recommend waiting or choosing something else. New clients complete a brief medical review (a good faith exam) before their first treatment.
Can I pay over time?
Yes. Financing is available through CareCredit, subject to credit approval. See payment plans.
